Teaching Philosophy:
In the past I would have been a firm advocate for every child to go through school, do their best and go to college. I still believe in that statement, but what I have come to realize is that college is not for everyone, and school does not always help children find their true talents. As a teacher I will help children find their confidence and their talents and help them excel in what they are interested in. Even though I will be teaching art, I realize that only a few future artists will pass through my classroom, I will also be teaching to doctors, librarians, mechanics, etc. It is important to me to take a child centered approach to teaching. I will constantly be learning more about my students, their future goals and how they learn and function in the classroom and along the way I will find new ways and solutions to teach to multiple intelligences.
I am also an advocate for interdisciplinary lessons. Collaboration between other subjects will create a holistic and solid basis for learning. Using information learned from other classes as scaffolding, we can creatively expand and explore through a variety of media within the art classroom.
