beginning ceramics

Students taking beginning ceramics will learn the fundamentals of ceramics as an art form. Students will learn various hand-building techniques, while creating a series of clay projects. Students will be able to make pinch pots, cylinders, coil built pots and tiles, while learning how to carve, add and glaze these pieces
Create 4 slab rolled cylinders; choose your best 2 to be graded. You will learn how to use the slab roller to flatten the clay for your ceramic pieces. Two cylinders will represent form and two will represent function (you will turn in one form and one function). All of the cylinders will be between 4-6 inches tall with a base diameter of 3-4 inches.

Create one large coil pot (max 10x10 in). You must have a sketch of the shape of your vessel before you begin 10 pts. Additionally you will practice your shape on a pinch pot/tile. This piece will demonstrate your knowledge of additive, low relief, high relief and carving through. Before carving your piece should be leather hard and you must have a test piece and sketch. Make sure your pot has a meaning or theme include this in your sketch.
